An appeal for donations was made earlier this year to help Ciara, who has profound and multiple learning difficulties, to make the most of her education at Oak Grove College in Worthing.

The £5,000 bed allows students who have to spend long periods of time in the lying position to join in all classroom activities. Its adjustability makes it easy to find a comfortable position and enable students to better interact with their classmates.

Geoff Earl, secretary to the Friends of Oak Grove College, said: “The appeal was amazingly successful and we have recently taken delivery of the new ACHEEVA bed. As you can see from the picture, Ciara is overjoyed.

“It is difficult to convey in words the enormous benefit that this addition will have on the daily routine for both Ciara and her fellow students.

“On behalf of Ciara and Oak Grove College, I would like to pass on our thanks for the generosity of Herald and Gazette readers and the local community organisations who responded directly as a result of the newspaper appeal.”

The school, a community generic special college covering Worthing and the surrounding areas, from Southwick and Shoreham to Littlehampton, and inland as far as Steyning and Pulborough, has now launched a new appeal.

The Friends have already raised more than £2,000 and the target is £6,000 for additional outdoor gym equipment to help the more-able students.
