Adur Festival makes a thrilling start

Adur Festival kicked off with a host of events celebrating the theme of '˜place' at the weekend.

Shoreham saw a free standing, three metre weatherproof Perspex cube containing a bed and a carpet of grass arrive in town on Saturday.

This inclusive, interactive participatory work for all ages had young and older visitors fascinated and intrigued.

Emergency Exit Arts held a street performance promenade piece entitled You Are Here. Viewers were invited to enter into an extraordinary experience where the digital world became the physical and the virtual became the real.

The afternoon of June 4 also saw a surprise singing performance from local choir Coastline Harmony, popping up flash mob style outside Teddy’s Cafe.

On Sunday, June 5, special guest local author Jane Rusbridge visited Sussex Yacht Club. Jane was reading and talking about the inspiration behind her prize-winning West Sussex set novel Rook. The audience were fascinated to here more about her research, and in particular how many old Sussex words there are for different types of mud.

The weekend also saw art and craft sessions with Over the Moon’s Crafty Bikes, making kites, pom poms and embroidery around various Shoreham locations.

Shoreham Fort’s Military History Weekend also went off with a bang with parade drills, firing demos and lots of kids activities in the sunshine.

There have also been exhibitions, art session, talks and film screenings, and Mike Hatchard’s Jazz Breakfast.

Adur Festival is running from Saturday, June 4, until Sunday, June 19 this year, with free and ticketed events throughout the 16 days.
