Adur East Lions Club welcomes new president from Worthing

MOVE OVER Bob Geldof, the Adur East Lions Club know how to combine charity and rock and roll.

The club’s new president is Bill Hurren, of Longlands, Worthing, who spent the 1960s and 1970s touring the world as a solo country music singer.

He said: “It was great, I loved it. But I was a lot younger then, I could not do it now.

“I couldn’t do the late nights, the booze and the parties!”

Bill, 60, first joined the Lions club in the early 1990s.

He and his wife, Linda, both transferred to the Adur East group when they moved to Worthing, in 2002.

“It’s nice, very rewarding,” said Bill, who has run his own waste disposal business, Hump It, Lump It, Dump It, in Worthing for the last 23 years.

“When you have raised money and you give it to a deserving cause, it is very rewarding.

“On top of that, there is a really good social side to it all.”

He said they had chosen the Adur East, rather than the Worthing club, as it had more connections within their old clubs.

Bill is not new to being president, as he took on the position about five years ago in Adur, and also did a two-year stint while at Peacehaven, which had separate sections for men and women.

Bill said he would not be choosing a charity of the year, but continuing to support as many local good causes as possible.

Recommending others get involved in the club, he said: “People can get a lot of satisfaction from helping others, others who deserve it.”
