A27 work set to cause 20-40 weeks of disruption

Works along the A27 could last between 20 and 40 weeks

Highways England has sent letters to 7,500 residents, asking if they would prefer 40 weeks of less disruptive work, or around 20 weeks of quicker, yet noisier work, due to the use of specialist machinery.

The works will involve several closures of exits and gaps in the central reservation of the A27 between the Offington Corner roundabout, in Worthing, and the Coach and Horses pub, in Clapham.

The letter reads: “Hand-digging the columns out will be much more expensive and more time consuming than suction excavating, which will take less time but may be noisier due to the equipment used.”

The works would take place between 9pm and 6.30am, with noisier works to stop at 11pm.

The agency estimates work on each lamppost will take a few nights, with the disruption to individual properties limited as work moves along the route.

Residents will be able to access their properties for entry and exit, with proof of address shown on production of the letter or identification.

They will be escorted when it is safe to do so.

The posts need to be replaced due to their age and condition.

The letter added: “We will be removing 82 lighting columns and replacing with 73 new passively safecolumns with new LED lanterns.

“The old columns were constructed of concrete whereby the new passively safe columns are constructed from a material which on impact will fold causing less damage and injury to the travelling public.”

Planned road closures will need to be arranged when the timetable of work is finalised, with diversions in place.

The closures planned are as follows:

- Closure of the gap in the A27 central reservation opposite the Coach and Horses pub

- Closure of the gap in the A27 central reservation opposite Cote Street

- Closure of A24 northbound exit from the Offington Corner roundabout

- Closure of the A27 eastbound exit from the Offington Corner roundabout

- Closure of both the A2031 southbound exit from the Offington Corner roundabout and the A2031 northbound entrance to the Offington Corner roundabout.

- Closure of Goodwood Road exit from the Offington Corner roundabout and Goodwood road entrance to the A27 westbound exit from the Offington Corner roundabout

Residents can take part in the consultation by responding to the letters received, or filling in an online survey.

The closing date for comments is Friday, December 18.
