The A27 is currently closed in both directions, between the A2025, near Lancing, and the A283, near Shoreham, following the Shoreham air disaster.

Repair works at the crash site will be carried out by Highways England and West Sussex County Council over the weekend.

West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, John O’Brien, said: “The public have been really understanding with the disruption this major incident has caused.

“With the Bank Holiday approaching, we are asking for further patience at a busy time for our roads.

“If you have to go to Shoreham by car, please be prepared that your journey may take longer than normal.

“If you are planning to travel from further afield, please plan ahead so your route avoids the area completely.

“And if you can, please use public transport, cycle or walk.”

He added: “There are a couple of events taking place in the area over the weekend.

“Again, if you are going to these events, please prepare for delays or consider alternative transport to get there and back.”

Road users that need to travel along the A27 are advised to follow the diversion route.”

The diversion route, north of Shoreham, via the A24/A283 remains in place.

The A27 will be reopened as a single lane carriageway in each direction while police continue searching the site in the coming weeks.

The council will provide regular traffic updates throughout the Bank Holiday weekend while the A27 is shut.

Sussex Police chief constable Giles York said there would be no access from the A27 to Lancing College and Shoreham airport for some time.
