4,000-mile cross-country challenge nearing the end

The Veterans in Action team embarked on World War 1 – 100 on April 28, with the aim of completing the walk over 100 days.

Team leader Garry Goldingay said it was one of the charity’s biggest challenges to date.

“The aim is twofold. Primarily it is to raise awareness of the centenary of the start of the Great War, and the sacrifices made by the three million British and Commonwealth service personnel who were killed or wounded in the service of their countries.

“Secondly it is to learn from the past and raise funds for those veterans who are currently suffering from the effects of war, or who have found the transition to civilian life difficult.”

On Sunday, having started at Bognor in the morning and passed through Felpham and Middleton, the walkers will travel along the A259 to Ferry Road, Littlehampton, and over the red footbridge.

They then travel along River Road to the High Street, Littlehampton.

The walk continues through Church Street, Beaumont Park and Henry Avenue to The Street, Rustington, then on via East Preston to the A259 Littlehampton Road. The walk travels through Ferring via Sea Lane to the seafront. It will turn inland again at Sea Lane, Goring, and along the A259 Goring Road.

It continues through Rowlands Road to Montague Street, Worthing, back down to the seafront and along the A259 Brighton Road to Shoreham High Street.

The route travels up East Street and back along New Road to Brighton Road, then continues through Southwick to Brighton.

The overall aim is to finish at Westminster Abbey at 11pm on August 4, which is exactly 100 years from the day that Britain declared war on Germany.

A vigil will be held to commemorate all those who were killed or injured.

The huge undertaking has involved many veterans, both on the walk and in fundraising throughout the challenge.
