Yesterday’s World gave to many at charity fair before becoming a thing of the past itself

A number of good causes benefited from the first Yesterday’s World charity fair, held in Battle in August 2010. There were tombolas, raffles and bric-a-brac stalls raising much-needed cash for causes including St Michael’s Hospice, the RNLI, the Ufosa Foundation, RSPCA, Royal British Legion, Brownbread Horse Rescue and Macmillan Cancer Research. Help For Heroes also received a welcome boost, thanks to various activities on the day, plus a percentage of the entry fee for visiting the Yesterday’s World garden.

Visitors were entertained with performances from a belly dancing troupe, hip hop dancers and jive dancers and everyone had a good time. Sadly, five years later, the tourist attraction itself became a thing of the past, closing its doors on November 1, 2015, as the owners could no longer afford to keep it running. The museum documented 125 years of British social living history and contained more than 150,000 nostalgic artefacts, plus virtual and interactive exhibits. Yesterday’s World was well-known for its life-size street scenes and shop displays, which included an old-fashioned chemist and a sweet shop.
