Lancing’s victorious school boxing team
This week, in a change from the usual football photos, we have a photo of the Lancing County Secondary School boxing team from the 1958/59 season.
The photo was sent in by David Brown, of Monks Close, Lancing, who is pictured front and centre, with his boxing gloves on.
David said: “The photo was taken at the annual boxing match against West Tarring.
“Lancing won 12 of the 14 bouts that year, and one of the bouts fell through as Michael Godwin’s opponent did not appear.”
The full line-up of the team is below:
Back row (left to right) – Michael Wakeham; David Townsend; Laurence Knight; Martin Wakeham; Michael Godwin; Michael Doherty.
Middle row – D(?) Hefferon; Michael Elborough; Peter Godfrey; Peter (Buster) Brown; Tom Brown; Martin Johnson.
Front row – Paul Hefferon; Roger Kimber; David Souter; David Brown; Tony Feldberg; Stan Frances; Paul Chamberlain.
David added that he and Tom Brown are brothers, as are Paul and D Hefferon, and Martin and Michael Wakeham.
David is still involved in boxing, at Brighton and Hove Boxing Club, and coached Scott Welch, who won the ABA National title in 1992.
Get in touch if you know the first name of the second Hefferon brother, or if you have any sporting photos you would like to share.
