Evacuation experience for pupils 10 years ago

Ten years ago, children from Shoreham and Southwick found out for themselves what it was like to be evacuated as part of their learning about the Second World War. The children had to leave their parents behind as part of the project. Pupils from years three and four at Shoreham Beach Primary School were waved off from Shoreham railway station in November 2010, while year-six pupils from Eastbrook Primary School in Southwick were evacuated in September 2010.

The Shoreham Beach pupils were met at Fishersgate railway station by an evacuation officer before being taken to St Peter’s School in Shoreham. At the evacuation centre, they heard about life during the war in Shoreham, before visiting an air raid shelter under the school. The Eastbrook pupils were evacuated from the school’s north site, in Manor Hall Road, Southwick, to the south site in Gardner Road, Fishersgate, as part of their Battles, Bombs and Bravery topic. After catching the train from Southwick to Fishersgate, the children were interviewed by their prospective host families.
