This Sussex town has the lowest rate of Covid-19 infections in England, figures show

A town in Sussex has the lowest rate of Covid-19 infections in England and Wales, according to the latest government figures.

In the data released by Public Health England – on Friday (May 15) – Hastings reported an infection rate of 49.5 per 100,000 people.

A total of 46 people in the town have tested positive for the virus, according to the figures.

Mendip, in Somerset, has the second-lowest rate of infection of 50.5 per 100,000 people.

Rother had the sixth lowest infection rate at 88.9 per 100,000 people.

According to the figures, a total of 85 people in Rother have tested positive for the virus.

In East Sussex as a whole, 655 people have tested positive. That is a rate of 118.1 per 100,000 people.

Both Hastings and Rother are both well below the average rate of infection across the county.

NHS England figures show a total of 76 people have died at hospitals operated by the East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust.

Elsewhere in East Sussex, Eastbourne accounts for 147 of confirmed cases – a rate of 142.5 per 100,000 people – while Wealden has 195 cases at a rate of 121.7 per 100,000 people.

Lewes has 182 confirmed cases at a rate of 177.1, Public Health England figures show.

In West Sussex, 1,269 people have tested positive for Covid-19. That is a rate of 147.8 per 100,000 people.

Worthing has had 207 confirmed cases at a rate of 188.1, the figures show – the highest rate in the county.

There have been 92 cases in Adur – a rate of 144 – while there have been 151 cases in Arun, where the rate is 94.5 per 100,000 people.

Chichester have had 138 cases at a rate of 114.3, while 199 people in Crawley have tested positive for the virus. The rate there is 177 per 100,000 people, Public Health England said.

Horsham has recorded a rate of 141.3, where 201 people have been confirmed to have the virus.

Mid Sussex has recorded a rate of 187.7 per 100.000 people. A total of 281 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in Mid Sussex.

In England, the rate of infection per every 100,000 people is 252.6, according to Public Health England.
