Community shows its support for village school

Community spirit was in fine form on Saturday as villagers defied the weather to support Friends of Upper Beeding School.

The team of volunteers, who raise money for Upper Beeding Primary School, put on the annual summer community fête in the grounds, in School Lane.

There was a whole day of entertainment for children, families and the wider community, with fun and games, arena events and a dog show during the day, followed by live music and a beer tent in the evening.

Stalls were manned by non-profit making and charity organisations to raise money for their own causes.

Rob Edgley, from FUBS, said: “A year in the planning for the FUBS team brought us to the summer fête and the only thing we couldn’t plan for was the weather. Despite its best efforts to spoil our annual fête, the day went amazingly well.

“Sure, people did run for cover when the rain and thunderstorms came but where many would have gone home to dry out, the great community of Upper Beeding and Bramber stayed with us and when the sun did shine, the fun and games continued and were enjoyed by all.”

Some acts were unable to take to the arena for safety reasons but there were great performances from the school choir, Kaleidoscope Singers, Sama Karate School, Vocal Fusion Acapella, Ariel Octavier Acapella Group and Celebration Samba, which really brought the sunshine with its performance and the audience participation.

For the evening, the playground was bathed in warm sunlight and hundreds of people turned up with chairs and picnic rugs to enjoy live music from Zoe Zori, Confession to the Thief and The Other’s Brothers.

Mr Edgley added: “So, despite the weather and a potential wash out, this year’s event has been very successful and hopefully raised lots of money for the great children and teachers of the outstanding Upper Beeding Primary School.”
