The move by West Sussex County Council is to give babies access to libraries so they can enjoy the benefits of books, stories and rhymes.

Parents will be given the opportunity to take away a ‘My First Library Card’ from August, when they register their child’s birth in West Sussex.

David Barling, cabinet member for residents’ services, said: “It is great news that our newest and youngest residents will have the opportunity to immediately reap the benefits of our fantastic libraries.

“Research has shown how beneficial sharing books, stories and rhymes with babies can be and our libraries can help parents help their youngest.

The library card, a joint initiative, will show the bestselling picture book character The Gruffalo, thanks to publisher Macmillan who have provided the image at no extra cost.

All the libraries in West Sussex have books suitable for babies and toddlers, who won’t be fined for late returns or any damage.
