The national chain had been set to occupy part of a two-storey restaurant and bar on the site of a run-down seafront shelter opposite West Buildings, but went into administration at the beginning of the month.

Developer Nextcolour Ltd was given planning permission in October last year, but Worthing Borough Council said it hoped the setback would not delay construction too significantly.

A council spokesman said: "We are disappointed to hear about Bistrot Pierre as the restaurant has been much anticipated by residents and visitors as part of our programme to rejuvenate the seafront.

"COVID-19 has introduced a lot of uncertainty to the hospitality sector. The council will continue to work with the developer to find a suitable operator for the West Buildings Shelter site and hopefully we will see shovels in the grounds as soon as possible."

The development was described as a 'food and drink destination' during planning, with Bistrot Pierre as the flagship operator.

It is set to inlcude a ground floor outdoor seating area and a covered first floor terrace, offering 'a modern destination restaurant with spectacular views and a landmark pavilion'.

Bistrot Pierre has reportedly appointed KPMG as administrator to, according to hospitality trade website Propel, attempt to agree a deal on the group's debt with its current private-equity backer, which would see it continue to back the business through a pre-pack administration.

It could also lead to the company trimming its estate, according to the Propel report.

A company spokesman confirmed it would reopen its Eastbourne restaurant at the Wish Tower site, which opened its doors after lockdown on July 8.

Bistrot Pierre has been approached for comment regarding its Worthing development.
