These uncertain times also place a burden on people’s mental health as they cope with all manner of anxieties, be they old, new or amplified by the coronavirus pandemic.

Upper Beeding’s Gemma Nice is no stranger to these feelings, reaching a point in 2007 where the stress of veterinary nursing became too much and she needed a release.

Thirteen years later, 34-year-old Gemma runs her own yoga teaching business, Easy Yoga, and is offering her expertise to help people navigate the stresses of these unprecedented times with free online lessons.

“It’s been amazing to be able to help more people,” said Gemma, whose Facebook Live classes have even reached the other side of the Atlantic.

“It’s slightly different to teaching face to face as I can’t adjust people or give them a head massage at the end of the class but it’s still working.

People are still feeling like they need to practice yoga to deal with all the stress and uncertainty at this current time and to feel a little bit of the normality before this.

“So many people have messaged and said ‘I had never thought of doing it but now it’s changed my life for the better’.”

Gemma’s daily 9.30am classes on Facebook are for all ages and abilities, allowing beginners to experiment in the comfort and anonymity of their own homes and even get the children involved.

Paid for classes are also available and it is these wider programmes that form the basis of Easy Yoga.
