WORLD OF WORDS: Zine set to showcase '˜outsider' culture

Here's one to watch out for: The Action, a new zine out this month, aims to bring you the best of Worthing's small (but growing) '˜outsider' culture.

It is produced by The Action Collective, a recently-formed community forum for writers, artists and musicians dedicated to breaking the mould of traditionalism in the arts.

Executive editor Laurie Owen said: “The idea evolved from lively conversations at the Train of Thought Gallery in North Street, which is owned by Kev Hough, the zine’s managing editor.

“We are, in effect, a loose, friendly and informal collective, committed to providing a left-field voice and platform for those who might otherwise struggle to be heard.

“As well as our zine, we will also be putting on many art and music-based events.”

The first issue of The Action contains features on art (focusing on the recent Blake’s Outsiders exhibition at Worthing Museum and Art Gallery), local experimental noise music, outsider literature, and politics of the fiercely non-Tory kind. There is also new short fiction, poetry and art work.

Laurie added: “the whole thing is liberally sprinkled with much satirical humour and not a little weirdness.”

The zine will be quarterly and will be on sale for £2 at the Train of Thought shop, Coast Cafe, Bar 42, Anchored micro-pub, The Clockhouse in East Preston, and at the monthly Worthing Film Club screenings, plus several other places still to be confirmed.
