WILDLIFE COURSE: In Southwick

ANYONE who has ever stood on a beach and wondered what life lies beneath the waves can now find out, thanks to a new course run by the Sussex Wildlife Trust adult education programme.

Sussex Sea Life – Mammals to Sharks will focus on the more unusual species of marine life visiting the Sussex coast.

The course is run by Stephen Savage, a biologist who been studying Sussex sea mammals for the last 19 years.

Mr Savage said: “The course provides an overview of the fascinating studies we have made in recent years and what we have discovered about these appealing animals.

“Sadly, many species are declining, including the common seal, which is occasionally reported in the River Adur.

“To find out more about these elusive mammals, we assisted in an electronic seal tagging project in 2009 to monitor their movements.

“We will consider the findings of this exciting project and how it will help us to protect seals in the future.”
