REVIEW: Murder Mistaken, Connaught Theatre, Worthing

WHODUNNIT it isn’t. The murder, and the build up to it, happen in the first scene of Murder Mistaken, at the Connaught Theatre, Worthing.

So, you might not need to guess the culprit, but guessing what’s going to happen is another matter.

It was difficult to predict, keeping the audience glued to the action from start to finish.

In the end, the conclusion was unexpected, though a little convenient.

We had come up with multiple options – some of them better than what was offered, to be honest – but didn’t quite get all the story right until it was played out on stage.

Bruce James Productions presents the drama but, because of the company’s policy to do away with programmes, it’s difficult to give too much detail about the cast.

Nick Barclay played the villain, Edward Bar, a man determined to get money from his rich wife but who miscalculates her intentions.

He was suitably slimy and unpleasant, descending into positively vile – an excellent characterisation of the part.

Highlight, though, was poor old Emmie, the much put-upon, rather simple old maid, played by Erin Geraghty. She brought a bit of humour and much sympathy, but I’d have liked to see her get her own back somehow.

It’s a very pleasant evening away from the repeats on television.

Murder Mistaken runs until Saturday, April 7, at 7.30pm daily with a matinée on Saturday at 2.30pm.
