REVIEW: Stacey Kent and Her Musicians, Worthing Pavillion Theatre

That’s the feeling I had on Tuesday (May 29) evening, when Grammy-nominated American jazz singer Stacey Kent performed a selection of songs from her most recent release, Dreamer in Concert, at Worthing Pavilion Theatre.

Together with her wonderful musicians, Stacey’s delicate performance had people gently swaying to classics such as They Can’t Take That Away From Me and a fantastic take on novelist Kazuo Ishiguro’s Postcard Lovers,

In between the songs, Stacey’s on-stage dialogues with her saxophonist husband, Jim Tomlinson, was particularly sweet, as were her stories about her grandfather who taught her to recite French poetry.

For those who have never heard Stacey before, her talents lie in expressive delicate phrasing and clarity at very low volumes and perfect timing – particularly when singing one of my favourites – So Nice.

This type of stylish jazz smoothes over you like a silk scarf – it’s easy to see why the vocalist is a best-selling EMI Blue Note artist and British Jazz Award and BBC Jazz Award winner.

She is also very popular in France. Her album Raconte Moi was one of the biggest-selling French-language albums in the world last year.
