Film review: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 (8 out of 10)

We finally come to the end of another franchise - one that has pulled in enormous crowds for the past four years.

From humble beginnings, we have watched Katniss Everdeen become the Mockingjay, the focal figure in the struggle against an oppressive regime ruled by President Snow.

This final segment has plenty of action, lots of plot development and does move the story on - all the things Mockingjay part one didn’t.

In fact you could have summed up last year’s movie into about ten minutes and added it to this final part.

But then the franchise wouldn’t have made as much money.

Part two begins with Katniss recovering from the attack by her brain-washed friend Peeta.

The rebels are growing in confidence and strength as the Capitol loses its grip on the outlying districts.

However Katniss realises she is becoming just a political pawn as the rebel leader President Alma Coin takes more and more control.

How will she take control of her own destiny, protect the ones she loves and help bring down Snow?

The franchise started off with loads of CGI action and a fairly straightforward plot.

Over the four years it’s grown into a character-driven thriller with far less (but still good) action added.

I have to admit I lost track of what was happening to the various characters in some of the scenes in this second part of the finale.

But the strength of the films has been the actors and Jennifer Lawrence has been excellent throughout.

Josh Hutcherson as Peeta has also been very good and having Donald Sutherland as the evil Snow was a masterstroke.

Add the late Philip Seymour Hoffman in his final role, Julianne Moore as Coin, plus Stanley Tucci and Woody Harrelson and you’ve had a top-quality cast.

While I thoroughly enjoyed this last piece in the Hunger Games puzzle I admit it’s a franchise I’ll probably appreciate even more by watching the box set one after the other.
