Joby Taylor (Paul Dano) is a physical and emotional wreck. His rock band is on the verge of collapse and he must attend a meeting to sign an out-of-court divorce settlement with his estranged wife, Claire (Margarita Levieva).

Sadness turns to disbelief when Joby learns that his legal counsel (Jon Heder) has failed to secure him any access rights to his six-year-old daughter, Ellen (Shaylena Mandigo).

By signing the settlement agreement, he will forfeit any custody of the child.

In order to make sense of the impending separation, Joby asks to spend a day with Ellen to discover if she needs him in her life.
