Lottie Bedlow missed out on a spot in the quarter finals of the Great British Bake Off in Tuesday night’s episode after coming a cropper in ‘Eighties Week’, which saw the bakers making ice cream cakes on the hottest day of the year. The outside of Lottie’s chocolate cassette cake melted in the 35-degree heat, causing her to be sent home.

After her exit, the 31-year-old pantomime producer – who has won legions of fans for her dry sense of humour – showed her emotional side when she broke down in tears in front of the cameras.

She said: “It is just a massive relief, but also obviously I’m gutted not to see everyone every day. Honestly, it has been amazing.”

Last week, she was named the top baker for her Japan-inspired toadstool cake, and also got a rare handshake from judge Paul Hollywood for her Florentine biscuits.

She said: “I literally packed two outfits and I’m here in week seven, wearing everyone’s clothes. I can’t believe the stuff that I have done: I got a handshake, I got a star baker. I am so chuffed with myself, and maybe I can bake.”

In the first challenge of ‘Eighties week’, Lottie’s full English and beetroot, goat’s cheese and walnut quiches tickled the judge’s tastebuds.

But things started to go wrong for Lottie in the technical challenge, where she same second from bottom for her custard and jam finger doughnuts. The final nail in the coffin was her ice cream cake, which Paul Hollywood said was also tasteless.

Fellow baker Laura Adlington, who narrowly missed the chop, paid tribute to her friend: “Beneath the sarcastic, tough, exterior is a really kind, really funny, really lovely human being.”

Lottie can console herself with the fact that she leaves the competition as the most-followed baker from this series on Instagram, with almost 65,000 followers on the social media platform.
