African and western combination for the Petworth Festival

In this year’s second pairing of western and African musicians for the Petworth Festival, Max Baillie and Sura Susso present a mix of Baroque and West African music including pieces by Lully, Merula and centuries-old African bardic spirituals.

They will be performing on Thursday, July 23 from 7.45pm-9.45pm at the Leconfield Hall, Petworth.

Having met in Senegal in 2005, Max and Sura (above) struck up a fast friendship and discovered a unique musical chemistry with one another. In mixing their respective string traditions they were able to tap into each other’s styles with their shared imagination and improvisational flair, and have been playing concerts together ever since.

In their own right they both lead busy performance careers engaged in a range of projects and groups which have taken them to stages at major festivals in the UK including Womad, Glastonbury, and from major London venues to as far afield as Moscow, Sydney and New York.

Petworth supporters may well remember Max from last year’s Champs Hill performance by the ensemble Zum Roten Igel.

Also coming up at the Petworth Festival is the Kamus Quartet from Finland (Saturday, July 25, 12 noon-1.15pm, St Mary’s Church) with a programme to include Sibelius and Einojuhani Rautavaara.
