The men's team were again heavily depleted with a number of athletes competing in the AVIVA under-23 and under-20 Championships and European Trials. And, with other athletes ruled out through injury, Harriers' third place finish was an improvement on their last place in their previous meeting.

Andy Millen was undoubtedly the happiest Worthing athlete. He produced a fine day's sprinting with two personal best performances to finish second in the 100m with a time of 10.9secs, and first in the 200m with 22.5secs.

He said: "It's an excellent double, I'm really pleased and personally my season has been very good after a slow start. My personal best in the 100m was very satisfying and getting points for the team was important."

Other A string winners were Adam Stainsby in 1min 59.8sec in the 800m and Jan Jelinek, with 1.90m, in the high jump.

Stainsby said: "It's nice to win. I wasn't expecting it but I always go out to try to win. I sat in and bided my time and I'm very pleased with my time and the run."

Tim Jolly won the pole vault with 3.50m, and Alessandro Sinno took second in the B string with 3.00m. Dean Storry was victorious in the B string high jump and twins Matthew and Simon Evans took nine points in the hammer.

Jolly said: "I did okay. I'm on target and I've met my aim of 6,200 points for the year, which is pleasing. I was hoping for a good finish but didn't really expect it. I was just aiming to finish the race in a decent time."

The over-40 4x100m relay team also set a club record on the day by knocking 0.2secs off the previous time.

The result leaves Worthing in 11th position overall in the table and men's team coach Paul Collison said: "We've done all right. We're in mid-table which is good because our aim was to stay up.

"We had a good start, but faded a bit as we've had a depleted team recently. Tim Jolly's done very well for us and set a county record a few weeks back.

"Andy Millen and Dean Storry have stood out and Adam Stainsby has put in some very good performances."

Harriers' women's team had much more of a successful weekend as they secured their first victory of the season.

They had 21 athletes turn up, and won by three points from Herts Phoenix.

The return of Laura Duke from Cambridge University saw her and Jo Davison take maximum points with A and B string wins in the shot putt, discus and hammer.

In the pole vault, Alison Duke and Brittany Saville again secured maximum points with two first places, while Amber Willard and Susan Eames earned good points in the 3,000m.

Saville said: "I did okay. I wanted to do better but I think that the season for the team, as a whole, has gone okay.

"It's been disappointing for me personally but the team's more important. We've got a big squad and have picked up points consistently."

Team manager Alison Duke said: "I was really pleased with the day. To have such a large turnout is fantastic and we managed to compete in every event in both the A and B strings.

"Even with experienced girls like Caroline Garratt and Kelly Denyer missing, we covered their events and all the competitors put in fine performances, and we picked up a good number of points.

"There were no outstanding performances, or personal bests or new records but we had a general success, so I'm very happy."
