EMERGENCY work on a gas main in East Worthing is due to finish tomorrow, according to West Sussex County Council.
Southern Gas Networks is carrying out emergency work on the A259 at Brooklands.

According to West Sussex County Council's traffic information the work is due to finish on Friday, May 23.

However, the Herald has received reports from commuters and its own staff of diggers unattended and piles of earth next to the traffic lights this morning.

Herald reader Angie Bowyer was just one of the thousands of angry motorists stuck in traffic this morning (Thursday, May 22).

She said: "It took me 45 minutes to drive from Shoreham to the Aquarena this morning, all due to the 'emergency' gas works by Brooklands.

"What I want to know is, if they are emergency works, then why is no-one working there?

"It is so frustrating to queue for so long only to find no-one working.

"Every time I have driven past that site over the past week, no-one is there doing any work.

"Is any work actually taking place?"

The Herald is still waiting to hear from Southern Gas Networks to find out when the work will be completed.

In the meantime commuters can expect another afternoon and evening of congestion as workers attempt to get home tonight.

Yesterday (Wednesday, May 21), it took up to an hour for drivers to reach the A27 at Lyons Farm from Worthing town centre.
