CHARITIES could be left thousands of pounds out of pocket if a Worthing car boot sale loses its fight for survival.
The weekly sale in the car park of the Co-Op superstore in Newland Street faces the axe after complaints from nearby residents.
Council planning bosses told organisers in July that the sale, which began last September and has raised thousands of pounds for the Co-Op's community charity fund, requires planning consent to take place.
Apart from money raised by the sale itself, local charities are allowed to pitch stalls free of charge.
A previous planning committee meeting refused permission, despite officers' recommendations the sale should be allowed, after hearing complaints from locals in Station Road about noise.
And a hearing on Tuesday, October 21, will decide finally whether the sale can continue; now on a fortnightly basis and with reduced hours.
"We keep it as far away from the residents as possible," said sale organiser Roger Hayes.
"We use less than half the car park for the sellers.
"We've spoken to a lot of residents down there.
"A lot of them go to the sale. It does seem a shame to shut it down."
