TRAVELLERS from East Worthing station will have to wait, literally, for a more frequent train service.
This was revealed after passengers' complaints were voiced through Worthing Council's overview and scrutiny committee when it tackled representatives from Southern Rail and Network Rail.

Committee chairman Heather Mercer told the Herald: "They said there were not enough people using East Worthing station to warrant more frequent stops there.

"They told us that more stops at East Worthing would affect a lot more passengers elsewhere on the system.

"Also, a shortage of rolling stock means there will continue to be 'short' trains of only three carriages.

"As Southern Rail's franchise runs out at the end of next year, I think they don't intend to spend a lot more money on these issues."

Complain

Mrs Mercer said the companies had advised the council to complain to the rail regulator, and this would be done.

Trackside fly tipping on Network Rail property was among other matters raised at the meeting.

Mrs Mercer said the committee was told trackside rubbish was cleared twice a year, but material on the actual track itself was removed less often, because the power had to be switched off.

  • TRAIN company Southern Rail has increased its customer satisfaction rating.

  • The spring 2008 National Passenger Survey has revealed Southern's overall satisfaction rating is 81 per cent – which is one per cent higher than the national average and two per cent higher than the London and south east regional score.

Southern also improved security at its stations and ticket-buying facilities.
