A WORRIED Broadwater woman was urged by firefighters to put wet towels at the bottom of her front door after a fire broke out in the flat next door.
The woman dialled 999 at about 2.30pm on today (Tuesday, October 11) to say her flat in Caxton Court, Broadwater Road, was filling with smoke.
While five fire engines, police and paramedics raced to the scene, she was given fire saftey advice over the telephone and then went out onto her balcony.
According to Roy Barraclough, Worthing District Fire Commander, firefighters found the flat where the fire was and broke in, only to discover a lot of smoke and a mattress on fire.
Luckily, the occupant, a man believed to be in his 40s, wasn't home at the time.
He said: "When we arrived, there was no smoke in the corridors and no real inidication where the fire was and what was going on.
"We found the flat and got inside and there was a lot of smoke.
"We did a thorough search and had an ambulance on stand-by, but there was nobody inside."
Caxton Court is owned by Worthing Homes and staff were contacted about the fire.
