WORTHING Golf Club’s junior girls starred in the Sussex County Championships at Mid Sussex Golf Club last week.

In the 36-hole medal competition, Penny Brown, 16, who plays off a handicap of three, won by nine shots after scoring two-over in the morning and five-over in the afternoon to finish with a total of 151.

She finished eight shots clear of second-placed Lizzie Price, of Nevill, who is the Sussex junior captain and the 2014 champion

The win followed on from Penny’s fantastic performance in the Welsh Ladies Open earlier in May, when she finished third and reduced her handicap from five to three.

Anya Olsen won the handicap trophy after an excellent seven-under in the morning round.

The 15-year-old, who plays off a handicap of 12, then shot two under in the afternoon to win by 12 shots with a net score of 135. She also reduced her handicap to 11.

West Hove’s Holly Crompton was the runner-up with net 147.

Worthing’s Megan Edwards, off a handicap of ten, won the best round of the afternoon, while club-mate Lily Margaroli won the nearest-the-pin prize.

Worthing’s junior girls’ organiser, Sarah Cooper-Olsen, said: “I am very proud of the Worthing girls. They have all been working so hard over the winter at their golf and are beginning to reap the rewards.

“I expect to see their names in the news quite often over the next few months.

“They have also been playing regularly for Worthing Golf Club ladies’ section in Division 1 matches and inter-club knock-out competitions with great success.”

In the Ladies Champion-
ships, Highwoods’ Chelsea Masters was crowned county champion, with victory over Pyecombe’s Aileen Greenfield in the final.

There was more success for Worthing as they won the Sussex club scratch trophy and Paula Carver was the winner of the Sussex Plate.

The Sussex ladies golf team for 2015 was announced by county captain Sue Todd after the County Championships.

The team will compete against Surrey, Hampshire, Kent and Middlesex later this month, with the winning team then representing the south region in the national finals.

The competition takes place at Worthing Golf Club and Worthing’s Penny Brown, Paula Carver and Karen Sykes have all been named in the Sussex team.
