SOUTHWICK Football Club began their Sussex County League Division 3 campaign with an emphatic victory over Ifield at Old Barn Way on Saturday.
Shane Moses, Kieran Gillard, Alex Sarkies and Ben Presslie bagged a goal each as Wickers cruised to a comfortable win.
Southwick manager John Kilgarriff was pleased his team managed to pick up maximum points in their opening fixture and said: “It’s always pleasing when you begin the season with a victory.
“We were really strong from start to finish and could have had a few more with a bit more conviction in front of goal.
“But to score four and not concede in your first game is a good effort.
“It was the first time our defenders had played together, so to keep a clean sheet was pleasing.
“We had another three or four really good opportunities to increase our lead but we failed to take them.
“It’s been a long break and, with most other divisions starting a couple of weeks earlier, we just wanted to get back into it and we delighted to secure the victory.”
It was Southwick who started the brighter and they went ahead on 23 minutes when Moses finished off a ten-pass move.
The Wickers continued to dominate after gaining the lead and Gillard doubled their advantage five minutes later when he raced on to a Richard Hudson crossfield ball and made no mistake with his finish.
Southwick began the second half well and created a number of chances. Sarkies made it three on 55 minutes to put the game beyond Ifield.
The hosts completed a comprehensive opening day win with eight minutes left, when Wickers youth product Presslie headed home from close range after Hudson’s long-range effort had cannoned back of the bar and into his path.
