In his only In his only first-team management role to date, Skipper guided Town to a tenth-placed finish in Southern Combination League Division 1, while also helping them reach the second-round proper in the FA Vase.

Things are looking up for Steyning with approval being given for work to begin on a 3G surface at their Shooting Field home.

However, with news of Skipper’s resignation, a slight dampener has been put on proceedings.

Skipper admits it was a tough decision to make but increased work commitments were becoming an issue.

He said: “Unfortunately I have had to step down. This was in the main due to work commitments which were particularly difficult through the week.

“The club were informed of my change of work and although we worked closely together to try to make it work, it became more and more difficult to manage work and family life.”

Despite his departure, Skipper reserved special praise for club chairman Richard Woodbridge and committee member Mark Munns.

Looking back on his only year at Town, he believes taking the plunge into first-team management was not as tricky as originally thought.

He added: “I would like to put on record my appreciation for the support I received from the club. None more so than from both Richard and Mark with the support and understanding always there.

“I must admit I felt I settled into the manager’s role with ease. I was confident I could undertake the role and feel I have taken Steyning forward, albeit not for long.

“I am gutted to step down after building a squad and having such a good first season, then with the news of 3G, as I felt I could have taken Steyning to the next level.”
