Rob O’Toole, Kevin Keehan and Robin Deen and Jamie Cradock had the best of Shoreham’s other openings.

Defenders Andy Pearson and Niall O’Hagan were in outstanding form for Mussels to restrict United’s opportunities.

Shoreham manager Bryan O’Toole said: “We did well to get the win against a well-organised side. Fair play to them, they stuck to their task well but they didn’t really trouble us defensively.

“Apart from Joe’s goal, we just couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net and it was a hard-fought three points in the end.

“Andy Pearson and Niall O’Hagan were both brilliant for us in defence and we also gave a debut to Tom Caplin, who has joined from Lancing.”

Mussels travel to Hassocks tomorrow and O’Toole said: “There’s pressure on us now but we’ve just got to play it cool like we did on Saturday.

“We’ve just got to keep taking things one game at a time from now until the end of the season.”
