Lancers went into the game on the back of a 5-0 defeat at Pagham in midweek and fell behind at the Southern Counties East League side midway through the first half.

However, second half goals from Tom Caplin, with two, and Al Fair took Lancing through and Sharman said: “We were outstanding. I don’t think many people gave us much of chance before the game but everyone played really well.

“Everyone came together and the team spirit was fantastic to see and the atmosphere in the changing room afterwards was amazing.”

Beckenham went ahead on 25 minutes but Tom Caplin drew Lancers level five minutes into the second half.

Caplin headed home from close range to put Lancing 2-1 up, before Lancers keeper Callum Fidler made a superb save. Fair sealed Lancers’ win seven minutes from time.

Lancing will host fellow Southern Combination League Premier Division side Horsham YMCA in the next round and Sharman said: “We’ve played them already this season and it will be a game we’ll look forward to.”
