Shoreham Football Club’s perfect Southern Combination League Premier Division start came to an end last night.

Sam Schaaf got the only goal 15 minutes from time to ensure Horsham YMCA sealed a 1-0 home victory over Bryan O’Toole’s side.

Going into the contest, Shoreham had won all eight of their previous league matches but that 100 per cent beginning was ended.

Mussels boss O’Toole felt his side simply did not turn up on the night and said: “For some reason we just did not turn up. I’m not sure why that was but we looked a little lethargic and did not play well.

“I don’t think the defeat is a bad thing because myself and the players are even more hungry now.

“I’m feeling fresher and ready for a big game against Newhaven on Saturday.

“Both myself and the players are hurting and want to put this right with a performance in the next game.”

Devante Davis was sent racing away early in the first half but he blazed an effort well wide.

George Gaskin went for a shot on the hour instead of pulling back for strike partner Rob O’Toole as it remained scoreless, before Schaaf got the only goal.

YM substitute Nick Sullivan made an immediate impact as, a minute after coming on, his pull back was fired home by Schaaf to make it 1-0.

Despite pushing for an equaliser in the closing stages, Shoreham failed to find the net as YM held on for all three points.

Mussels are back in league action on Saturday when they host Newhaven at Middle Road (3pm).

SHOREHAM: Heyburn; Hartley, Familton, Pearson, Hand; Davis, Storrie, J.Keehan, Pitcher; R.O’Toole, Gaskin. Subs: Stevens (Pitcher), Craddock (Davis), K.Keehan, Zydonik, Barker.
