Steyning Town Football Club exited the Sussex Senior Cup at a muddy Lashmar on Tuesday evening when they lost 5-3 at division-higher East Preston.

A frenetic start saw the hosts awarded a free kick in the third minute and Shaun Charles struck a sweet volley past a helpless Matt Evans in the Steyning net from 20 yards.

Almost from the restart, the visitors lively left-winger Murat Aslan fired in a shot from the corner of the box that found its way into the

Town took the lead with a slick move that culminated in Aslan’s cross missing everything except Billy Franks’ hand in the 22nd minute. Adam Burton smashed the spot-kick into the top corner to give Town a lead which they took into the break.

EP were clearly given a message to up their game at half-time and came out far livelier. With 10 minutes of the half played, Charles broke down the left and centred for Matt Axell to score.

Axell grabbed his second and EP’s third on 62 minutes as he bravely headed home from close range after substitute Joe Shelley had rose highest at the far post for the knockdown.

Charles added his second on 80 minutes and four minutes later Shelley poked home a fifth.

There was still time for Town’s Callum Towse to show a bit of skill in added time and cross for Phil Williamson, who pulled a goal back.
