Steyning come back down to earth at Golds
Steyning Town Football Club came back down to earth with a bump on Saturday with a 5-0 defeat at Littlehampton in County League Division 2.
That followed a 6-3 extra-time win over local rivals Shoreham last Wednesday and Town assistant manager Tom Gurney said: “It was very much a case of after the Lord Mayor’s show.
“It really was a tired performance and we just didn’t get going. Littlehampton are a really good team and played with much more energy and tempo as we just weren’t at the races.
“Despite that, the scoreline was a bit harsh. We didn’t defend well enough from two set-pieces for their first two goals and then their third was a penalty.
“We had a couple of chances in the second half but it’s just a game to chalk off and forget about.”
Goals from Jerry Manning and George Gaskin from Mitchell Hand set-pieces were added to by Hand’s penalty on the stroke of half-time.
Michael Hendrick and Gaskin completed the scoring in the second half, while Tom Bowles went closest to netting for Steyning, with a header.
Town have signed keeper Matt Evans, who has previously played for Lancing and East Preston.
