Mussels lose a nine-goal thriller at Chi
SHOREHAM Football Club’s defensive frailties came back to haunt them on Saturday as they lost a nine-goal thriller away to Chichester.
Mussels joint boss Mark Burt felt his side were in complete control when they led 1-0 after half-an-hour but heads dropped after Chichester equalised and the home side were 3-1 ahead after 62 minutes.
Shoreham made it 3-2 but conceded again almost immediately, before a strong fight-back levelled the score at 4-4. However, with Mussels pushing for a winner, the hosts struck to grab a crucial three points.
The defeat leaves Shoreham, who are now fourth-from-bottom, just five points ahead of Chichester, who have played a game more.
Burt said: “They’re now only five points behind us but we’ve still got everything to play for. We’ve got 17 games left and the target has to be six wins to get us up to 40 points.”
Mussels have now conceded 68 goals in 25 league matches this season and Burt said: “We flew out of the traps, got an early goal and should have been three up after half-an-hour. We just couldn’t get that second goal and, if we had, I think we’d have gone on to win comfortbaly.
“But our heads went down when we conceded and there were then huge gaps in our defence as the back four was too square, which left us there for the taking at times.”

Mussels entertain former boss Sammy Donnelly’s high-flying Ringmer side on Saturday (3pm).
