Sam Ellis struck twice in second half stoppage-time to send Lancing United Football Club out of the Southern Combination League Division 2 Challenge Cup last night.

Dan Measom netted 14 minutes from the end to cancel out Asher Grindle’s effort soon after the restart, before Ellis’ late brace helped Westfield to a 3-1 semi-final success at Hanbury Park.

United assistant manager JJ Banasco-Zaragoza admitted losing so late was tough to take and said: “Losing it so late was hard to take for everyone. We battered them second half but credit to them they got two late goals to win it.”

Grindle got the game’s first goal four minutes after the interval to put Westfield in command.

Lancing United responded well and levelled through Measom 14 minutes from time.

As extra-time loomed, Westfield snatched it late on. Ellis fired his side back ahead on 92 minutes, then added another three minutes later to secure Westfield’s spot in this year’s final. United travel to Alfold on Saturday.

LANCING UNITED: Allfrey; Johnson, Franks, Tuppen, Dixon; Singers, Page, Gunn, Thetford, O’Regan; Measom. Subs: Hunt (Thetford,60), Stakim (Tuppen, 87), Brady, Smart, Church.
