SHOREHAM Football Club moved into the top ten of the Southern Combination League Premier Division with a third successive win on Tuesday evening.
After victories over struggling St Francis Rangers and Wick & Barnham United, Mussels defeated AFC Uckfield at Middle Road to climb up to tenth place.
Shoreham manager Simon Funnell was delighted to pick up another three points and believes his side should be aiming to finish in the top eight. He said: “We’re delighted to get three wins on the bounce and we’ll go into Saturday’s game with Chichester looking to get another win.
“When I took over, the aim of Matt Drew (first team coach) and I was to get on a little run and we’ve done that. We had just seven points from seven league games, so it’s always going to be tough to get in contention at the top after that but we’ll be looking to get into the top eight.
“There is a bit of a gap between the top sides and where we are but there’s no reason why we can’t beat the top sides when we play them.
“We played Newhaven, who are top, recently and only lost in the last minute and we’ve improved since then.
“I believe that if we have nine players on song and two who have an off day, we can beat anyone on our day in this league.”
Both sides had half chances in the first half on Tuesday, with Mussels looking dangerous on the break, and the hosts went ahead eight minutes before half-time when Toby House crossed for Brad O’Connor to net.
Shoreham keeper Sebastian Bos dealt well when called upon in the second period and Mussels sealed the three points five minutes from time when House crossed for Craig Goodsir to net.
Funnell said: “We asked for a reaction at half-time as we weren’t pleased with how we’d played in the first half and we got it. Before the game, if you’d said to me we’d get a 2-0 win and a clean sheet, I’d have taken it.”
