STEYNING Cricket Club closed in on promotion from Sussex League Division 4 with a seven-wicket win at Rye on Saturday.

The victory means Steyning need only 24 points from their remaining four games to ensure that they will be playing in Sussex League Division 3 next season.

Owain Jones was the star with bat and ball for the table-toppers as he picked up seven wickets and then followed that up with 95 runs.

Steyning won the toss and captain David Kennett put Rye into bat.

The visitors got off to a great start with the ball as opener Neil Browne (nought) and James Hamilton (five) were dismissed to leave Rye 10-2.

Jones dismissed six of the top seven batsmen and, after Will Wheeler and Jake Bryant were both out for nought, the hosts were in real trouble at 53-6.

Ben Clifton and Jo Lovell (23) put on 39 for the seventh wicket as Rye looked to reach a respectable total.

But Clifton’s 42 was the highest score of the innings as the hosts finished on 172-9 from 53 overs.

Jones proved a real handful with the ball and his final figures were 7-42 from 20 overs, which included three maidens.

Luke Chapman and Ashley Mwenda were the other bowlers to take a wicket.

Steyning lost an early wicket in reply as Hywel Jones was dismissed for eight.

Owain Jones and Ben Shelford (30) then put on 94 for the second wicket.

Jones and Gary Hunt (20 not out) added 43 before Jones was bowled for 95 as Steyning got home in 38 overs.

Kennett was delighted with another victory for his side as they close on promotion.

He said: “It was a great win for us, although it was frustrating to only take nine wickets after we had them 53-6 at one stage but the wicket continued to improve.

“Owain was absolutely fantastic with the ball and he ripped through their top order.

“The wicket was in perfect condition when we went out to bat after tea.

“Owain was again superb, this time with the bat, and he got us close to the winning line.

“He has been absolutely fantastic for us all year and has been a massive asset to our side.”

Steyning will be hoping to secure promotion with a win on Saturday when they host Keymer & Hassocks.
