SOUTHWICK Cricket Club captain Chris Summers claims his side need to start knuckling down and learn to bat out their overs if they want to achieve promotion into Division 1 of the West Sussex Invitation League this year.
Southwick dropped a place to third after their defeat at Scaynes Hill on Saturday when they were bowled out for 162 in 36.3 overs.

Dan Feniuk and Nick Taylor joint top-scored with just 23, and the biggest contribution to their run tally came from
34 extras.

Third-from-bottom Scaynes Hill then cruised to an eight-wicket victory and reached 164-2 in just 30.1 overs.

Summers said: "We all made good starts but no one went on at all. We were going along at a good scoring rate, but were about 100 runs short in the end.

"I've played for Southwick for 13 to 14 years and I cannot recall once winning up at Scaynes Hill in that time. They're a bit of a bogey side for us."

Nick Wright made 95 not out and Chris Markham hit an unbeaten 22 to comfortably see Scaynes Hill home, but Summers said: "Although you can't knock someone for getting 95, it wasn't the most convincing performance I've ever seen.

"We put him down early on and he was slapping it around but each time it just landed a few yards short of fielders.

"They got a few of our wickets cheaply and had a bit of luck. It was one of those days for us.

"The league is such a mixed bag with everyone beating everyone.

Hopefully, we're over our little blip and can rectify things this week."

Wickers' 2nd XI recorded an excellent victory over Scaynes Hill in Division 1.

Southwick were asked to bat first and captain Stuart McNeill hit an unbeaten 106 before he declared on 201-4. With vice-captain Steve Martin, McNeill put on 107 for the fourth wicket.

Scaynes Hill were then dismissed for 157 with Hanan Burki taking five of the wickets to fall.

McNeill said: "It was a dominant performance in which everyone played a part. We are fourth in the league approaching the halfway stage, which is a good effort."

Portslade were held to a frustrating draw by Felbridge & Sunnyside in Division 1.

Felbridge won the toss and inserted Portslade, who made 240-7.

Opener Sam Jones scored 57, which was well assisted by Tom Van Der Neut (31) in the early stages.

Ian Morley (34 not out) and Luke Jones, with 44 not out from only 15 balls with two fours and five sixes, added a 53-run partnership towards the close to make life difficult for their opponents.

Portslade captain Alex Smith said: "We were very happy with the total we set.

"We built the innings well and made a good platform to work from."

Opener Jack Williams made 91 and stayed in for virtually Felbridge's whole innings before he was the ninth man out, but Felbridge held on to finish on 227-9.

He was assisted by Anthony Jones (39) and David Jones (28) as Smith led Portslade's figures with 6-81 from 17 overs, while Steven Case and Andrew Reid also took a wicket each.

Smith said: "After their start, they looked as though they would go on to win it fairly comfortably, but we took some wickets and gradually they started to drop.

"We had eight balls at their last wicket but they managed to hang on. Both sides played some good cricket so, overall, it was probably a fair result.

"We're happy not to have lost as, at one stage, all three results were possible.

"On Saturday, we face Southwater who have been doing well and are second in the league.

"Johann Brouwer gets a lot of runs for them, but I'm looking forward to what should be a good game."
