FINDON'S visit to the Memorial Ground on Saturday will give a better indication as to whether Steyning Cricket Club are over the worst.
Steyning's seven-wicket win against bottom-of-the-table Goring at Goring Recreation Ground on Saturday made it two successive wins, and Steyning are now sixth in the table and 18 points behind Findon, who sit fourth.

Steyning's two successive victories follow a run of four straight defeats and Steyning skipper Tim Humphries is confident that his side will make it three in a row at Findon's expense.

He said: "I'm sure we've turned the corner. Our batsmen are in form and these two wins have restored our confidence. I still back us to beat anyone in this league."

What was particularly encouraging for Steyning was that two teenagers – Luke Chapman and Ben Buckley – were the architects of their latest victory. Chapman returned figures of 4-40 in his 11 overs, while Buckley held the innings together with a matchwinning 67, that contained a six and nine boundaries.

Humphries' decision to field on a very slow wicket was justified when Neil Mansbridge – playing his first match of the season – and Chapman had reduced Goring to 49-4. But Goring were rescued by Sam Botham, who found good company in tail-enders Alex Maynard and Seb Cartwright.

Botham and Maynard added 62 for the seventh wicket and Steyning were thwarted further by Cartwright who helped Botham in a ninth wicket partnership of 26.

The two stands were both broken by catches by Ed Lamb off Chapman's bowling.

Botham was last out just after completing his 50. Even so, Goring's total was well below what skipper Gareth Cook had wanted. He said: "Our defeat by Steyning was the story of our season. We should have got at least 250 but our batsmen let us down again."

Steyning made heavy weather of batting. Their total was stuck on 18 for six overs as Matt Keen – the pick of Goring's bowlers – and Cook both bowled three successive maidens.

Chris Geere, who relieved Keen, struck with his first delivery by dismissing David Curtis-Botting. Buckley joined Simon McNiff and the pair, slowly but surely, strengthened Steyning's position with a 58-run partnership.

Buckley and Hunt added a further 52 before Buckley was bowled by Keen, who conceded 20 runs from his 11 overs.

The in-form Matt Sewell provided some momentum by scoring all but five of his unbeaten 33 in boundaries. He and Hunt steered Steyning home with nine overs to spare to hand Goring their eighth successive defeat of the season.

Billingshurst have taken over from Bognor at the top of the table after their 134-run win over Findon on Saturday, which was their sixth victory from seven games this season.
