STEYNING captain Tim Humphries hopes that his side have turned a corner after their 67-run win over Arundel on Saturday ended a run of four successive defeats.
Steyning had won their opening match of the season and drawn the next game but four straight losses had dropped them to second from bottom.
However, the win over Arundel lifted them above their opponents and up to third from bottom and Humphries said: "Everyone was very happy with the result. We know we are a good side and can play some good cricket.
"There was a lot of pressure to get over the winning line, but I'm really pleased with the result.
"Hopefully, fingers crossed, we can now get on a winning run of five or six games and see where we are after that."
Arundel won the toss and inserted Steyning, and despite the early loss of David Curtis-Botting for just six, the runs escalated from there as each batsmen started to look more and more comfortable. Ben Buckley struck 40 and Gary Hunt scored 41, before Matt Sewell, who hit 64 not out with nine fours, and Dave Kennett, who smashed an unbeaten 69 with seven fours and five sixes put on 104 for the fifth wicket and took Steyning to 248-4, which they declared on after 49 overs.
Arundel left-arm spinner Neil Chitty took two wickets for 96 runs, while Harrison Temple and Richard James took the other wickets to fall.
Ryan Chitty (41) and Bradley James (15) started the response well for Arundel and put on 53 for the first wicket, but after James fell, Arundel collapsed to 87-6.
Temple provided stubborn resistance and was three away from his half century when he was dismissed by Dave Mates, and the remaining three batsmen quickly fell to give Steyning victory.
Humphries and Andy Isaacs led Steyning's attack, with three wickets each, and Humphries said: "After we lost an early wicket, we batted well and everyone contributed.
"With the ball, we struggled to take early wickets, as we have no real strike bowler.
"But when we get one or two, we seem to go through sides fairly easily.
"We face bottom club Goring on Saturday and with the same team out and everything going right, hopefully, we can get another result.
"Luke Chapman, who's just 16, has come into the squad and played some very good cricket so he will deservedly retain his place."
Goring have so far lost all seven of their league matches.
