GREAT to read that our local hospitals' GP referrals have been dramatically slashed to meet government targets ("Hospitals ahead of the waiting game", Herald, September 11).
Would it have anything to do with their recent cancellation of all regular hospital check-ups?
Until recently, patients who were deemed to need regular hospital monitoring simply made an appointment for their next visit before they left the hospi
tal, but now they all have to remember to book an appointment to see their GPs so he/she can refer them for a check-up.
This may meet the hospitals' targets, but it passes more work to GPs and risks a reduction in the preventative monitoring that can update treatment or save lives.
Another example of targets met by sleight of hand?
