I want to criticise the people who decided not to vote in the council and European elections on June 4.
Their main reason was the recent MPs' expenses scandal.
Sure, the British public are very, very angry over that, but refusing to vote at election time is not the answer to their anger.
For a start, they are depriving themselves of their dem
ocratic right to vote.
Secondly, why don't they vote for one of the smaller parties by way of protest?
Thirdly, don't these people who abstain from voting realise they are, in a sense, shooting themselves in the foot?
They also ought to realise that they are lucky that they have a chance to vote, because, in some countries, you don't have that chance at all.
On Friday, June 5, I attended the counting of the votes in Worthing as an observer.
I must admit I was quite shocked at the number of ballot papers which were defaced.
What is the matter with people who do things like that?
I think what the government ought to do in this country is do what they do in Australia and New Zealand, and make voting at election time compulsory.
