I HAVE seen the email that the chairman of the rugby club sent to his members, asking for them to write in to the local newspapers in favour of his proposal to take over Buckingham Park's community café, as a
profit-making venture for his club.
I could understand his motive as, at the end of the day, that is where his support lies, but I think it is important that he provides them with all the correct information and facts, so that they can decide whether the current tenant, Amelia, has bee
n treated fairly and whether they, as members of the rugby club, actually want to support a proposal
which upsets the majority of park users.
Many of the 1,500 signatures collected on the petition, to keep Cup Cakes Café open and independent, were from the families and friends of the rugby club.
Just because you support the sport, it does not mean that you ecessarily agree with all decisions made by the chairman, especially
when it is clearly damaging the reputation of the club.
This is nothing to do with sport, and the 1,500 people who signed the petition, plus all those who are continuing to add their names to that list, are not anti-rugby, or any other sport.
The rugby club is just as entitled to use the park facilities as anyone else, but what the rugby club should not be doing is trying to take over a much-loved and treasured community asset for its own financial gain.
This is simply not what the community wants.
We want to keep our café independent, with the great service, friendly staff and fair prices that have made it so well used and loved.
Cup Cakes Café was the inspiration of a caring local resident who had a dream to bring Buckingham Park alive, and that is exactly what she has achieved.
