I REMEMBER the crash of the Valiant bomber in 1956 (Bygones, June 26).
I was at home with my mother in Eastbrook Road, Portslade.

I jumped on my bike and headed towards Southwick Recreation Ground, which we decided was where the plane had come down.

I went onto the stone bridge in Eastbrook Way and looked over the
recreation ground and saw the plane wreckage.

I also recall seeing a hole in the cross-over section of the bridge itself.

I returned home with a small souvenir.

In the following days, the local papers wrote of the possibility that the wreckage could be radioactive.

Being a responsible 13-year-old, I threw my souvenir over the fence, into the timber yard at Bakers the funeral directors in Church Road, Portslade.

I guess I thought it wouldn't harm anyone there.
