CONGRATULATIONS and many thanks to all those who worked so hard to make the St Nicolas and St Mary's School reunion such a resounding success.
I am one of those pupils who moved with the school from its old buildings, next to St Nicolas' Church, to the new site in Eastern Avenue, and it was a thrill to go along and be reminded of some of the history and meet old friends, some of whom I hadn
't seen for 35 years.
While looking back with nostalgia, it was good to be reminded of the dedication shown by the then headmaster, the late Len Cullen, whose vision and passion for the school ensured the Christian ethos was at the heart of all we did, and enabled the school to continue in its new location pretty much against all odds.
It was a joy, too, to discover that same enthusiasm and belief remains central to the school today, evident in conversations with head teacher David Etherton, and present staff, and pupils, who so ably and warmly showed round us old boys and girls.
Our old motto of "Nothing without God" appears to be as relevant to those involved today as it was to us all those years ago.
The organisers did so much to ensure we had a memorable afternoon, and it was clear that past staff, governors and pupils alike enjoyed a wonderful day.
I hope that so many of us who renewed old acquaintances can stay in touch and I know from the buzz that was around that all who attended would want to wish the school continued success in the wake of reorganisation.
