Musicians. They're a complex bunch.
Over the years since unto us rock'n'roll was born, they've been relentlessly working hard to re-enforce the rebel clichés – lobbing TVs out of windows, doing shameful things in tour buses, pushing Lycra to dangerous new extremes.

And yet, at the same time, they are second only to Miss World contestants in their earnest desire to "make the world a better place" (and, it should be noted, get a lot more done about it, unhampered as they are by the acrylic diamanté nail extensions of the former that make it a darn sight more difficult to feed soup to the homeless).

Bob Geldof is an obvious example, whose do-gooding has more than compensated for unleashing Peaches on the world.

And down south, our crop of home-grown bands are keeping up the trend like troopers.

Live Support Machine and KWASH have received abundant support from local acts, and now Borrowed Time's Gig for Jake, in aid of the British Liver Trust, is the next worthy Worthing event in the diary – with not a trashed hotel room to speak of.

Borrowed Time have been gigging their way around Worthing for two years, bringing youthful zing to modern and classic rock standards by the likes of Greenday, AC/DC, Metallica, Rainbow, Bon Jovi, Blink 182, Black Sabbath, The Foo Fighters and Blur.

Made up of singers Kerry Boone and Lauren Merison, guitarists Sam Strotten and Tom Randall and bassist Nathan Long, the Worthing act claim: "We don't think we've ever had a bad remark about one of our gigs. When we perform, we just try to entertain as much as possible, that's our main aim."

But the party was put on pause in November when their much-loved drummer and mate Jake Orpin tragically died of liver failure, aged 20.
Ten months on and back on the scene with new drummer Amy, the band have organised the charity gig at the Assembly Hall.

The showcase of local talent promises to be a great tribute to Jake and a way to raise awareness of the cause.

Vocalist Kerry said: "With this gig, we are hoping to get across the point of how important it is to be an organ donor – if the right match for Jake's liver had been found in time, maybe he would be with us today."

"Jake was a great person and will be missed dearly.

"The gig won't bring him back but at least we have done something for him and helped towards a cause in Jake's name.

"We want to raise an amazing amount of money for the British Liver Trust."

On the bill alongside Borrowed Time are close mates Third Time Luckie, who Jake began drumming with back in 2001.

The band said: "We can't wait for the night, it's going to be a great way to keep the memory of Jake alive. He was a good friend, and a great drummer."

Tickets for the gig cost £6.50 and must be bought beforehand by ringing 01903 206206.
