Just wanted to write to thank Herald reporter Joe Riddle.
Had it not been for Joe’s article on October 2 about Charlie Hilton and family, we may not have witnessed what the people of Shoreham are really capable of.
From Joe’s article, a thread was started on The New Shoreham By Sea Facebook page, how could we, as a community help one of our own?
Within two weeks, a quiz was arranged, the tickets became like Willy Wonka’s golden tickets, everyone wanted one, 100 tickets sold in 24 hours, with the help of the teams at Mako and Caring Lady.
Then the donations started, never have I seen so many raffle prizes arriving, boxes and boxes of them, the traders of Shoreham and further afield dug deep and gave generously.
The decision was made that we try to get everything for free for the night, so we begged for space to hold the quiz and Adur Council gave us the Council Chamber for the night and the staff to mind it. Lidl came up trumps with enough food and drink to feed an army, they even had it delivered to my door. Shore Estates could not have done more for us, keeping in contact and offering help in so many different ways.
Then on the night itself, help from so many, we were like one big family, even the Brighton and Hove Albion chief executive got in on the act, presenting Charlie with an amazing trip to watch Liverpool v Real Madrid, including travel and hotel. Not a dry eye in the house for that little surprise!
Bobby, Worthing’s very own town crier, made for a very loud welcome and Mark piano sent everyone of humming at the end of the evening.
So from me to Joe, thank you, you have enabled the people of Shoreham to show what we are all capable of and the difference we can make to the lives of one part of our family in their hour of need.
Councillor Emma Evans
Adur District Council
