I read Chris Adam Smith’s opinion last week and totally agree with his comments. It is beyond me how 93 members of the Maltravers Club out of 360 members can decide that the building be sold by auction to developers.

As a member, I was at this meeting and it was negative from the onset. No talk of paying off the debts (which are £30,000) and turning it round or selling it as a going concern.

The ‘committee’ knew what they wanted from the start and anyone with any ideas was shut down straight away.

It is very sad this beautiful building has come to this. The club was started as The British Legion by a group of friends including my grandad and his brother.

In 1936/7 with hard work they bought the land to build the present building.

It was a hub of community during the war years, with dances upstairs used by soldiers, sailors and airmen, not just English but also American and Canadian.

I also know that the 30th Assault Group used it for meetings and has been the headquarters for various associations. If the walls could speak! What a story they would tell.

Why can’t this lovely club have a new lease of life? With the right people running it and a good business plan it can again be the hub of the community, for young and old.

Come on people, we must fight for this and not lose the great potential it has.
